Major Ethnic Families in Gilgit Baltistan
The people of Gilgit Baltistan can be classified into two major Ethinc Families.
- Indo-Aryan.
- Tibetian
1. Indo-Aryan.
Major Indo-Aryan ethinc group present in Gilgit Baltistan are the
Dards
and the Burusho people
Dardics people
The Dards of Gilgit Baltistan can be further classified into families such as
Shin
Yashkun
Dom
Kamin
live mainly in districts Gilgit , Diamer , Astor and some parts of district Skardu and Ghizer.
Burusho
Although most of the people from this ethnic group claim themselves to be inheritor of Greeks. Yet recent experiments have found that they are Dards.
The Burusho ( Brusho) people live in the Hunza and Nagar Districts.
2 .Tibetian
Only group which don’t have Indo-Aryan background in whole Pakistan.
Tibetian traits are found in the people of Baltistan ( district Ghanche and Kharmang) ,
also in some parts of district Skardu and Shiger.
Mainly people of Shiger and Skardu have mixed Tibetian and Dardic traits.
It is believed that during the 7th century A.D baltistan came under the rule of Tibetian Kings .
The Tibetian culture and religion was quickly adopted by the locals .
As a result of cross marriages between the Tibetian and a local people a mixed generation sprung up in this region .
That is why Tibetian genes are more prominent towards the Eastern side of Baltistan and Dardic genes shows it's dominance towards the west.
